Eye Examinations

An eye examination consists of several components on top of understanding how well you can see and the ‘power’ of your eyes. Learning the health of the front and back of your eye is equally important as eye conditions can be diagnosed and through early intervention, most eye conditions are treatable with good prognosis.

HISTORY-TAKING

For an accurate eye assessment, your optometrist will seek to understand your current and past eye condition as well as any symptoms that you might have. The optometrist will also like to know of any eye conditions that run in the family and any systemic conditions that are likely to affect the eyes such as diabetes and/or hypertension.

SUBJECTIVE REFRACTION AND PRELIMINARY TESTS

This component of the eye test will establish the ‘power’ of your eyes and how well you can currently see. Depending on your age and the information provided during history-taking, your optometrist may perform additional tests to assess your eye muscles, colour vision, pupil function and side vision.

ANTERIOR (FRONT OF EYE) ASSESSMENT

This test is conducted with a slit-lamp biomicroscope and it assesses the front part of your eyes including the eyelids and lashes, cornea as well as the crystalline lens. This assessment will detect sources of dry eye, infections (especially for contact lens wearers) and any presence of cataract.

POSTERIOR (BACK OF EYE) ASSESSMENT

The retina is the only part in the body where our blood vessels may be assessed without cutting into the body, and this part of the eye will be assessed through this test. Eye conditions such as retinal detachment and effects of systemic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol may be detected here.

EYE PRESSURE TEST

The eye consists of fluid that helps to maintain the shape of the eyeball and to provide nutrients. If fluid production here is too fast or its drainage out of the eye is too slow, high eye pressure may occur and cause damage to the optic nerves resulting in an eye condition called glaucoma. This eye pressure test is therefore very important and should be done on a regular basis.
