Spectacle frames can be manufactured from various materials; the following are a few of the common materials used
Pure titanium and beta-titanium are the best metals and popular materials for spectacle frames as they are very light, durable, strong and corrosion-resistant. Titanium eyewear can be produced in a variety of colours and is good for those who are allergic to certain metals such as nickel.
Beta-titanium is an alloy of predominantly titanium, with small amounts of aluminium and vanadium. Due to these other metals in the alloy, beta-titanium are more flexible than 100% titanium for easier fitting adjustments and has memory features.
Stainless steel frames are an alloy of steel and chromium and are therefore light (not as light as titanium) and strong; higher amounts of chromium provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel frames are generally more affordable than frames made of other metals as stainless steel is readily available. Many stainless steel frames are also nickel-free and thus hypoallergenic.
Acetate is a high-quality plastic originating from wood pulp and natural cotton fibers, and is therefore environmental-friendly and renewable. Other than being hypoallergenic, frames made of acetate are also durable and flexible. However, frames made of acetate can be heavier than other plastic such as Ultem and some metal materials.
Through mixing different colours into melted acetate, a wide variety of colour combinations can be achieved and this also enables acetate to retain its colour brightness impeccably over time.
Ultem is an amorphous thermoplastic polyetherimide (PEI) material which has extraordinary properties perfect for spectacle frames. Ultem is extremely flexible (therefore durable), ultra-lightweight (as light or lighter than titanium metal) and has excellent heat resistance. Compared to frames made of acetate, Ultem frames can be manufactured thinner and are available with nose pads.
TR90 is a thermoplastic material that is incredibly durable due to its flexibility, and lightweight. Owing to its superior flexibility, TR 90 frames contour the wearer’s face and are therefore extremely comfortable. Besides being supremely lightweight, TR90 frames are able to hold its shape and last a long time.
